On 4 December, 2006, Professor Fokko Johannes van der Woude passed away at the age of 53 years following a prolonged illness.

Fokko van der Woude was born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands and studied medicine in Groningen in the Netherlands from 1970 to 1977. Following his clinical education in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Groningen University Hospital, he started his scientific career in 1982 as a research fellow.
