Note from the ERA-EDTA

Jorge B. Cannata-Andía

President

Rosanna Coppo

Chairperson of the Administrative Offices

The ERA-EDTA has recognized the great value of celebrating the World Kidney Day (WKD) as a momentum to focus the attention of the political community—and, through the media, of people at large—on the burden of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) considering patients’ morbility/mortality as well as the socio-economical impact of dialysis and transplantation.

It is clear that the whole renal community needs to take effective actions to inform policymakers and also the general public on the threat to health posed by the CKD epidemic and the urgent need to health strategies to deal with its consequences. The realization of the need of a common effort and even more to tailor the actions on a European level has triggered the constitution of the European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA) in 2007. The EKHA is an alliance of four societies: besides the ERA-EDTA, the European Kidney Patients’ Federation (CEAPIR), the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses’ Association/European Renal Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA) and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN).

Consequently, the EKHA can speak authoritatively for people with kidney disease and for all members of the multi-disciplinary renal care team including doctors and nurses.

The management committee, which includes the President of the ERA-EDTA and the Chairperson of the ERA-EDTA Administrative Offices, works closely with the people involved in the European health organization to increase the awareness on CKD and the celebration of the WKD will offer a good opportunity. To this aim, the EKHA has planned an action at the European Parliament in Brussels on 13 March.
