Ali Ba
çi, MD, is Professor of Medicine at Ege University, School of Medicine, Division of Nephrology, Izmir Turkey. Dr Basci's research topics and publications are mainly related to hypertension and cardiovascular problems in dialysis and renal transplant patients. He also published text book chapters in Turkish on various topics related to clinical nephrology. Dr Basci is one of the founders and a past president of the Balkan Cities Nephrology, Transplantation, Dialysis and Artificial Organs Assosiation (BANTAO). He is also founding editor-in chief of the BANTAO Journal. He served as an Ordinary Council member in the European Renal Association–Renal Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA). Dri Basci received several grants from Fresenius Medical Care, Pfizer, Novartis, Roche and Astra Zeneca. He is Country Medical Representative and Chief of the Scientific Advisory Board for Dialysis Clinics of Fresenius Medical Care in Turkey and receives a honorarium for this function. Bernard Canaud is Professor of Nephrology at the Montpellier University School of Medicine, Lapeyronie Hospital, Montpellier, France since 1990.
Professor Canaud graduated in Medicine from the Montpellier Medical School in 1980 and went on to specialize in Nephrology in 1981. He went on to receive his Master of Science doctorate in Bioenergetics and Nutrition from the University of Sciences, Montpellier in 1986. Meanwhile, he held the positions of Assistant in Critical Care Medicine from 1981 to 1984 and Assistant Professor of Nephrology from 1984 to 1988 at Montpellier University.
Dr Canaud serves on the Editorial Board of many journals including Néphrologie et Thérapeutique, Journal of Nephrology, Blood Purification, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Clinical Nephrology and Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation. He is also a member of many societies including the European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA), the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the French Society of Nephrology. He serves presently as president of the Francophone Society of Dialysis.
Dr Canaud serves as French coordinator of the international DOPPS study and is principal investigator of a multicentre trial on HDF versus HD in elderly patients supported by a grant of the French Ministry of Health.
He received several grants and funding supports for clinical trials and scientific studies from: Fresenius Medical Care, Baxter, Bellco-Sorin, Amgen, Roche, Janssen-Cilag, Medcomp and Hemotech.
Denis Fouque, MD, PhD, is Professor of Nephrology at the University Claude Bernard Lyon1, and Associate Chief of the Division of Nephrology at the Edouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon, France. Dr Fouque has published 130 papers, including reviews, meta-analyses and 12 book chapters. His research fields are in nutrition and metabolism in chronic kidney disease and dialysis. He is head of the JE 2411 Research Unit in Malnutrition at the University Claude Bernard Lyon1. Dr Fouque also got training in Evidence based Medicine by founding the Cochrane Collaboration Renal Group in 1997 and being the Co-ordinating Editor until 2001. Dr Fouque was President of the International Society for Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (2004–2006) and is currently co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Renal Nutrition. Dr Fouque is a member of the K-DIGO Advisory Board. Dr Fouque has received several grants from Baxter Healthcare, Fresenius Medical Care, Genzyme, Amgen, Roche, and Numico.
Patrick Haage, MD, PhD, MBA is Chairman of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at HELIOS Klinikum Wuppertal, University Hospital of the private University Witten/Herdecke, Germany. As chief radiologist of the HELIOS Region West he is also the responsible chief physician of the HELIOS Klinikum Schwelm, HELIOS St. Josefs-Hospital Bochum-Linden and HELIOS Klinikum Siegburg, Germany. Dr. Haage has (co)authored over 150 publications and lectures on national and international meetings particularly on experimental and clinical work in Interventional Radiology and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. His special interest is focused on minimally invasive percutaneous procedures in dysfunctional dialysis accesses. Regarding his involvement in vascular access Dr. Haage serves as treasurer of the Vascular Access Society, board member of the Vascular Access Forum and lecturer of the Vascular Access Academy. Additionally he has been appointed member of the Scientific Programme Committee of CIRSE (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe) and Honorary Member of the Vascular Access Society of the Americas (VASA) and reviews for many journals, such as RöFo, Kidney International, European Radiology, Investigative Radiology, CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology, Neuroradiology and Journal of Endovascular Therapy.
Dr Haage is a certified Health Care Quality Manager of the German Society for Quality and has received his MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree in 2003. Dr. Haage has no conflict of interests.
Klaus Konner, MD, is a retired clinical nephrologist. His particular interest were problems of vascular access in haemodialysis patients. He performed access surgery (as a nephrologist) over a period of 30 years with a clear preference of autologous arteriovenous fistulae, in addition practicing diagnostic and interventional radiology. He has published a series of articles, reviews and book chapters, serving also as a reviewer for many journals. He is a member of the European Dialysis and Transplant Association/European Renal Association, the American Society of Nephrology and a founding member of the Vascular Access Society. Dr Konner's special interest focused in the creation of autologous arteriovenous fistulae even in elderly, hypertensive and diabetic patients. Dr Konner has received research funds, grants or contracts by Fresenius Medical Care Germany and Gambro Renal Products Germany.
Jeroen Kooman, MD, PhD is associate professor at the department of Internal Medicine, University Hospital Maastricht. Dr Kooman has co-authored approximately 120 peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters, most of them on clinical research in dialysis therapies. He is member of the editorial board of Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation and Blood Purification and serves as reviewer for various other journals in the field of nephrology. He is member of the Dutch Quality Improvement Committee of the Dutch Federation of Nephrology and of the Scientific Council of the Dutch Kidney Foundation. Dr Kooman has received grants and/or speaker fees from Baxter Healthcare, Gambro Corporate Research, Fresenius Medical Care and Amgen.
Alejandro Martin-Malo is Professor of Medicine at the University of Cordoba and Chief of Dialysis Units at Reina Sofia University Hospital, Cordoba, Spain.
Dr Martin-Malo has published more than 170 papers, including reviews and book chapters, on various subjects related to nephrology. Research fields include chronic renal failure, biocompatibility of dialysis membranes, cell activation, apoptosis, dialysis adequacy, hemodiafiltration, anemia and renal osteodistrophy. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, International Society of Nephrology, European Renal Association and Spanish Society of Nephrology. He is also a member of the editorial Board and reviewer in many journals. Dr Martin-Malo is included in the Steering Committee of several broad clinical studies. He has received research grants from Fresenius Medical Care, Bellco, Amgen and from the Spanish National Health Service.
Luciano A. Pedrini, MD, is Associate Professor of Nephrology at the University of Brescia, Italy, and Head of the Division of Nephrology and Dialysis of the Bolognini Hospital, Seriate, Italy.
Dr Pedrini has published about 100 papers including original articles, reviews and book chapters, on dialysis techniques, kinetics and adequacy. He was a member of the Expert Group for the European Best Practice Guide Lines for Hemodialysis, Part 1, and for the Guidelines on "Dialysis Adequacy" and on "Water and Dialysis Solutions" of the Italian Society of Nephrology.
Dr Pedrini has received research grants from: Hospal Gambro, Bellco, Fresenius Medical Care and Baxter Italy.
Francesco Pizzarelli, MD, is Head of the Nephrology Division of the SM Annunziata Hospital, Florence, Italy.
Dr Pizzarelli has published more than 230 papers, including reviews and book chapters, on convective dialysis therapies, intradialytic cardiovascular instability, uremic cardiomyopathy and various topics related to clinical nephrology. Dr Pizzarelli is a member of various Steering Committees of multicentre international studies. He was a member of Working Groups for national guidelines and external reviewer for K/DOQI. He serves as reviewer for many journals. Dr Pizzarelli has received research grants and/or fees for invited lectures from Bellco, Fresenius and Gambro.
James Tattersall, MD, MRCP is a Staff Grade Nephrologist and manager of information technology at the department of renal medicine, St. James's University Hospital, Leeds, UK.
Dr Tattersall has published numerous papers, including a patent, textbook chapters and reviews, on adequacy of dialysis, dialysis technology and information technology. Dr Tattersall is a reviewer for several nephrology and medical journals, he has served as a participant of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) and is a lecturer for the International Society of Nephrology committee for the Global Advancement of Nephrology (ISN-COMGAN).
Dr Tattersall has worked as a software developer and Medical Director of Mediqal Limited, a company providing software for managing renal patients. He has been a consultant for Fresenius AG in the past.
Pieter Marten ter Wee, MD, PhD, is Professor of Nephrology and Head of the Department of Nephrology at the Vrije Universiteit Medical Center, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Dr ter Wee has published more than 170 papers, including reviews and book chapters, on renal haemodynamics, clinical nephrology, and peritoneal dialysis. He is the chairman of the committee on quality control issues of the Dutch Federation of Nephrology. In addition, he is the chairman of the Nephrology Teaching Committee of the Dutch Federation of Nephrology. Dr ter Wee is a member of a number of societies in the Nephrology field and a reviewer for many journals. He has been a member of the scientific board of the Dutch Kidney Foundation. Dr ter Wee has received research grants from the Dutch Kidney Foundation and several companies including Baxter Healthcare, Fresenius Medical Care, Roche and AMGEN.
Jan HM Tordoir, MD, PhD, is associate Professor of Surgery at the department of Surgery of the University Hospital Maastricht and head of the Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory. In addition to vascular surgery, his specific interest is vascular access in dialysis patients. Dr Tordoir has published more than 100 papers including reviews and book chapters on dialysis vascular access. He is a member of the Dutch Working group on Vascular Access and President of the European Vascular Access Society. He serves as a member or reviewer of the editorial board of several journals. In concordance with a multidisciplinary expert group of nephrologists, surgeons and interventional radiologists, he was involved in the creation of European guidelines for Vascular Access. Recently, Dr Tordoir works on a netwerk of centers of excellence to improve vascular access care for hemodialysis patients.
Dr. Tordoir has received several grants from the Dutch Kidney Foundation and Dutch Heart Association.
Raymond Vanholder, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine at the University of Gent, and Head of the Nephrology Division of the Gent University Hospital, Belgium.
Dr Vanholder has published more than 500 papers including reviews and book chapters, on adequacy of dialysis, uraemic toxicity and various topics related to clinical nephrology. Dr Vanholder is a member of the Steering Committee of the Membrane Permeability Outcome (MPO) Study. He serves as a member or reviewer of the editiorial review board of many journals. He also serves as President for the Uremic Toxicity Work Group (EUTOX) and is member of the Executive Board of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) and of the Advisory Board of the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI). He also chairs the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force (RDRTF) of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). Dr Vanholder is Founding President of the Belgian Society of Nephrology and is past President of the European Society for Artificial Organs (ESAO). Dr Vanholder has received several grants from: Baxter Healthcare, Fresenius Medical Care, Gambro, Novartis, Roche, Amgen and Bellco.
Marianne A. A. A Vennegoor RD, worked as a senior specialist renal dietitian for 30 years at St Thomas’ Hospital London, England. She is presently working as a volunteer renal dietician for the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) as Education Committee Chair and for Kidney Research UK as a member of the Patients Advisory Group.
Ms Vennegoor edited several books for patients, contributed to chapters in textbooks and published in several journals on the subject of practical aspects of nutritional management of CKD patients and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Renal Nutrition.
Ms Vennegoor is a member of the Health Professions Council in UK, the British Dietetic Association and Renal Nutrition Group, the European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association, the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association-European Renal Care Association (founder of the Nutrition Group), the International Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation-Council on Renal Nutrition (European Representative) and the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism.
She has not received grants in the past.
Christoph Wanner, MD, is Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Director of the Center of Clinical Research at the University Hospital of Würzburg, Germany. Dr Wanner's areas of interest are metabolism, dyslipidemia, inflammation and cardiovascular disease in kidney patients. He has served as the principal investigator of the 4D Study and is steering committee member and central European coordinator of the SHARP Study. He serves as editor-in chief, subject editor and member of the editorial review boards of many journals. He also serves as President of the National Kidney Foundation Germany and the Kuratorium of the German Society of Nephrology. Dr Wanner is a member of the KDIGO Board of Directors and the European Best Practice Guideline Hemodialysis Work Group. He has received research grants from Amgen, Fresenius and Genzyme.
