Low plasma levels of adiponectin in CKD are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events. Some drugs, prominent among these, thiazolidinediones, are able to raise the levels but studies in CKD patients are lacking. See Wieçek et al., pages 981–988

This term covers the adolescent with renal disease and guides this often difficult patient during the transition to adult care. What the "adult nephrologist" should know about it. See Bell pages 988–992

In this paper, the mechanisms whereby renal sodium retention causes essential hypertension are reviewed. Much has been learned from a variety of genetic mutations and polymorphisms of sodium channels and related proteins in the kidney resulting in the dysregulation of the sodium metabolism and/or salt-sensitive hypertension. See Rodriguez-Iturbe and Vaziri, pages 992–996

Hypoxia reduces anti-inflammatory effects of PPAR-{gamma} activation and may possibly modulate inflammatory responses in the diseased kidney. See Li et al., pages 1041–1052

The functional, protective effects (delays in uraemia, reduction in proteinuria) were associated with decreased renal fibrosis and inflammation. See Koepke et al., pages 1062–1070

This downregulation may be associated with the proteinuria seen in preeclamptic women. See Garovic et al., pages 1136–1144

Less invasive angioplasty (PTA) was successful in 97% of patients with critical ischaemic limbs. This intervention should be preferred to other more invasive interventions. See Graziani et al., pages 1144–1150
