Th. Andreoli, E. Ritz and L. Rosivall, Hungarian Kidney Foundation, Budapest, 2006. Total pages: 655.
This monograph is a compilation of lectures given in recent courses of the Budapest Nephrology School, a yearly educational programme organized under the sponsorship of the ISN, the ERA-EDTA and the Hungarian Kidney Foundation. Lectures are particularly selected to provide young nephrologists and physicians with updated knowledge on important issues in nephrology, hypertension, dialysis and kidney transplantation. Following a description of the objectives and achievements of the sponsors and of the educational endeavours of the ISN Commission for the Global Advancement of Nephrology (COMGAN), this 655 page book is further organized into six scientific chapters covering topics in basic science (12 papers), nephrology (17 papers), hypertension (4 papers), dialysis (4 papers), transplantation (5 papers), ending with a review on technical advances in dialysis membranes. The focus is thus clearly set, first on current advances in the understanding of accepted or debated mechanisms of kidney functions in health and renal disease, followed by patho-physiological and therapeutic approaches of a variety of electrolyte and acidbase disorders, of clinical, biological and immunological disturbances encountered in acute and chronic renal diseases and currently debated issues in dialysis therapies and renal transplantation. The authorship is largely multinational, with 44 contributors from Western and Eastern European countries, 19 from North America (USA and Canada) and 2 from Israël.
Discussing each of the 43 papers would not be possible within the space allotted in the journal for this review. Selecting a sample of them on rather personal criteria could readily be considered unfair by authors left aside, since they all belong to top-level scientific/medical institutions and have fully met their commitment to provide the participants in the course and the readership of this monograph with the cutting-edge body of knowledge in their respective area of expertise, supported by comprehensive reference lists. The presentation and editing style of the book are efficiently laid out as a teaching material, with a very clear typesetting, subdivisions of the chapters into numerous, well-delineated paragraphs, with numerous graphical and photographical illustrations, many of them in colour. This monograph can thus be well-recommended, not only for nephrologists in training, but also for practising colleagues who will find in this volume clear explanations and useful answers regarding a wide scope of topics of current interest in nephrology.
