The comment of Ivanovski et al. on the possible value of proteinuria in the evaluation of renal damage in ApoE knockout mice with and without renal failure is certainly important and deserves publication. One has to acknowledge, however, that morphological changes and proteinuria do not always go ‘hand-in-hand’. Moreover, proteinuria (or albuminuria) in mice is not that easy to measure and very often the variation between animals is extremely high. Furthermore, one has to acknowledge that the models used by Buzello et al. [1] and Bro et al. [2] are different from the model used by the authors.

The comment on differences between genders is certainly helpful since gender is known to be an important factor in the progression of chronic renal failure. There are, however, good arguments for using only male animals for studies in renal failure. In addition, it would be helpful if the information that is cited twice by the authors as unpublished data could be available to everyone.
