The analogies between the effects of ageing and of uraemia on the function
and the structure of central elastic arteries and of the heart are
striking. Qualitatively similar changes are seen in pulse contour, pulse
wave velocity, and impedance and also similar structural abnormalities with
wall thickening, diminished elastin, and increased collagen content. The
altered 'Windkessel' function of central arteries in age and uraemia is one
factor contributing to left ventricular hypertrophy.
